How to extract a RAR file online (free)

  1. Drop your .rar file onto the box above, or click to choose it. If the archive is password-protected, type the password when asked.
  2. Browse the folders, search by name and click a file to preview it.
  3. Download one file, tick several and download them together, or take everything — repacked as .zip, .7z, .tar.gz or .tar, or saved to a folder in Chrome and Edge.

No WinRAR? No problem

RAR is a proprietary format, and plenty of computers and phones still have nothing installed that opens it. Instead of installing an archiver for one download, drop the file here. The page reads it with 7-Zip compiled to WebAssembly, which handles both RAR5 (the default since WinRAR 5.0) and the older RAR4 format, solid archives and self-extracting .exe files made from a RAR.

RAR is read-only here: because the format is proprietary, RAR archives cannot be created. If you need to pass the files on in a format everyone can open, convert the RAR to ZIP.

Password-protected RAR files

Encrypted archives are detected and you are asked for the password, including archives whose file names are encrypted so that nothing is listed until you unlock them. A wrong password is reported as such. If only some files in the archive are encrypted, the others can be extracted without it.

The password is used in your browser and goes nowhere else. That matters with RAR in particular: sending a private archive and its password to a website’s server defeats the point of encrypting it.

Multi-part archives

Split archives work in both naming styles: .part1.rar, .part2.rar… and the older .rar with .r00, .r01. Select or drop every volume together and the set opens as one archive. If a volume is missing, the tool names the missing file, and only the files that are complete can be extracted.

Large and solid archives

The archive is read from your disk in pieces, not loaded into memory, and extracted files go to your browser’s temporary storage on disk. There is no 2 GB ceiling. One thing to expect: in a solid RAR the files are compressed as one block, so reaching a file near the end means decompressing what comes before it. A progress bar with a cancel button is shown while that happens.

What about .cbr comic books?

A .cbr file is a RAR archive of images. Drop one in and click the first page: the built-in viewer shows the images with previous and next buttons. There is a CBR page with more detail.

Frequently asked questions

Do I need WinRAR to open a RAR file?

No. This tool opens .rar archives directly in your browser, using 7-Zip compiled to WebAssembly, so you can extract a RAR file without installing any software.

Does it support RAR5 archives?

Yes. Both the modern RAR5 format and the older RAR4 format are supported, including solid, password-protected and multi-volume archives in both.

Can it open password-protected RAR files?

Yes, if you know the password. The tool asks for it and decrypts the archive in your browser, including archives with encrypted file names. Neither the archive nor the password is sent to a server. A forgotten password cannot be recovered.

Are my RAR files uploaded to a server?

No. Extraction happens locally in your browser tab. Your files never leave your device, and the tool keeps working if you go offline after the page has loaded.

Can it open multi-part RAR archives?

Yes. Select or drop every volume together (.part1.rar, .part2.rar and so on, or .rar with .r00, .r01) and the set opens as one archive. If a volume is missing, the tool names it and only the complete files can be extracted.

Is there a size limit?

There is no fixed cap. The archive is read from disk in pieces and extracted files are written to your browser’s temporary storage, so the practical limit is free disk space. In private-browsing modes without that storage the tool falls back to memory and large archives may fail.
