HTML ↔ Markdown Converter

Paste HTML on the left to get clean Markdown on the right — or type Markdown on the right to get HTML. You can also open, drop or paste an .html or .md file, or paste text copied straight from a web page. GitHub-flavored tables, strikethrough and task lists supported.

Everything runs locally in your browser. Nothing is sent to a server.

How to convert HTML to Markdown

  1. Paste your HTML into the left pane, click open file, or drop an .html file anywhere on the page — clean Markdown appears on the right instantly.
  2. Adjust heading style, bullet marker or code-block style if you like — the Markdown updates live.
  3. Use copy or download above the Markdown pane to take the result.

Files and copied web content

Saved pages work as they are: open or drop an .html, .htm or .xhtml file and the whole document is converted, with the <head>, scripts and styles left out. The file's declared character encoding is respected, so older pages saved in Windows-1252 or similar keep their accented characters. A file copied in your file manager can be pasted in directly. If you copy a selection from a web page or a word processor and paste it into the left pane, the formatted HTML behind that selection is used rather than the flattened plain text, so headings, links, lists and tables carry over. Drop an .md file to go the other way.

Some saved pages hold almost no text of their own because a script draws the content when the page opens; converted as they are, they give little more than a placeholder such as "Loading...". Scripts are never run here, so the tool tells you when it meets one of these, and you can copy the content from the page as your browser shows it and paste it in instead. Gradle problems and configuration cache reports are read directly from the data embedded in the file.

Markdown back to HTML

Type or paste Markdown into the right pane and the HTML source appears on the left. GitHub-flavored Markdown is parsed, so pipe tables, ~~strikethrough~~, fenced code and task lists all render to their HTML equivalents. The left pane shows HTML source as text — nothing is executed as a live page.

What survives the conversion

Headings, paragraphs, bold/italic, links, images, blockquotes, ordered and unordered lists, inline and block code, horizontal rules and tables all map cleanly between the two formats. Markdown has no way to express <script>, <style>, arbitrary attributes or nested layout <div>s, so those are dropped or unwrapped to their text content when going HTML → Markdown.

Is anything uploaded?

No. Both directions run entirely in this page using self-hosted libraries. Paste internal documentation or draft content freely — it never leaves your device, and the tool works offline once loaded.

Which libraries does it use?

HTML → Markdown uses Turndown with its GitHub-flavored-Markdown plugin. Markdown → HTML uses marked. The HTML is parsed with the browser's own DOM parser, which does not run scripts or load remote resources.
